'The EP wants to drive Hungary into conflict, which is why it considers it unfit to assume EU presidency' – Kovács

"We know the actual reason: they dislike Hungary's pro-peace stance and want to drive us into conflict."

- Zoltán Kovács, State Secretary for International Communication wrote, in response to the news that the European Parliament has called into question Hungary's suitability to assume the rotating presidency of the EU Council due to the state of the rule of law in the country. According to Kovács, the accusation that Hungary is violating the EU's fundamental values is well-known, but the Hungarian government remains firm in its pro-peace stance.

As we reported on Wednesday, the European Parliament is preparing to adopt a resolution on the rule of law situation in Hungary and the blocked EU funds at its next plenary session. The not-yet final version of the resolution questions whether Hungary will be able to credibly fulfill the EU Council presidency in 2024.

As examples, the document cites the restrictions on the legal status of Hungarian teachers as well as on their social and labour rights. According to the draft resolution, the EP therefore calls on the Council to find a solution to the problem, adding that Parliament would otherwise intervene.

Zoltán Kovács said that these accusations have been repeated ad nauseam, while Hungary is a full member of the European Union. According to him, the EP is using its pressure to drag Hungary into the Russian-Ukrainian war, because they don't like the fact that Hungary is calling for peace and an immediate ceasefire.
