"And you know, I do believe that if President Trump had won the last presidential election here in the United States, this war (in Ukraine – TN) would not have broken out, because during the term of President Trump, there was no Russian attack against anyone. And I'm pretty sure, as sure as we can be about things that didn't happen, but still, I'm pretty sure still that if President Trump had won the election, this war would not have broken out. And we look at his possible return to the White House as a hope for a peaceful future," Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in an interview with the US TV channel Newsmax in New York.

Last summer Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also said that if Trump had been US president and Merkel the German chancellor, there would be no war in Ukraine.

In the interview, Szijjártó also spoke about the new indictment against former US president Donald Trump. He said: “We are standing by President Trump, to be honest. We are keeping our fingers crossed for him. Under his leadership, we had the best political relations between the United States and Hungary. He is a true friend and as a true friend he can count on us in any situation, that's for sure.”
